As the key technology of future intelligent transportation systems, V2X vehicle wireless communication technology supports the information exchange between the vehicle and the external world. Shine Tech Intelligent Transportation is dedicated to the research and implementation of V2X technology. It has made outstanding contributions in the field of intelligent transportation. In the 14th issue of Discover the Rising Stars, we interviewed Wei Junbo, the winner of the New Talent Award of China’s 5G Industry Innovation Entrepreneurship Contest’s national finale, and the founder of Shine Tech Intelligent Transportation. Together, we explored the charm of V2X wireless communication technology for vehicles.
Vehicle to Everything (V2X) is the Inevitable Choice for Intelligent Transportation
Founded in 2021, Shine Tech is dedicated to implementing V2X, providing full-stack V2X technology for intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs), self-driving cars, smart highways, and smart cities.
The founder of Shine Tech, Wei Junbo, has a B.S. in Vehicle Engineering from Jilin University and an MBA from Antai College of Economics & Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He was the General Manager of China for SAVARI, a leading V2X technology startup in Silicon Valley. The key members of his company are also from SAVARI, all of whom have years of experience working in the global industry and V2X intelligent networked products.
“Looking at the pain points such as low efficiency of the transportation system and poor road travel experience, I saw excellent opportunities for the application of V2X technology. The national government also supports technology innovation, providing fertile ground for our enterprise to grow. We want to do something truly valuable, so we started Shine Tech, focusing on the development, research, and implementation of V2X technology.” Wei Junbo said.
More and more people are choosing efficient, safe, and low-carbon ways of travel for the future; the traditional automotive landscape is undergoing significant changes. The automotive, transportation and information industries are integrating and merging: vehicles will become the next intelligent mobile terminal. The C-V2X technology’s ability to achieve cooperation between people, cars, and roads has made it a key technology for the future development of the automotive industry. Vehicles equipped with C-V2X technology have super-hearings and super-sights, enabling interconnections between cars and the infrastructure around cars. The vehicle owners can obtain accurate and timely information about the road ahead, thus improve safety, optimize road selection, and achieve dynamic information services.
Focus on V2X Technology to Improve Traffic Intelligence
Shine Tech’s core focus is on V2X technology research and development. It now has a complete V2X product system, for example, Shine Tech OBU protocol stack and application, C-V2X intelligent vehicle development platform, C-V2X roadside sensor unit (RSU), Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC), and many more.
Shine Tech provides technology and products to meet customers’ needs. The V2X covers the complete chain, from the cars to the roadside to the Cloud, supporting smart roads with sensor base stations coupled with Intelligent Cloud Traffic Control Center (CTCC). “We achieve traffic intelligence and improve traffic efficiency through V2X technology, creating smart cars and smart roads.” Wei Junbo said.
As early as 2017, ITS114 proposed that the concept of traffic brain should work in conjunction with smart intersections, which is an important hub for the entire traffic control system. The scene at the intersection can also reflect the capacity of the traffic signal control system and the level of traffic management. With the greatly improved computing power of front-end devices and edge computing devices and the advancing of communication capabilities such as 4G and 5G, this integration is slowly becoming a reality.
Shine Tech’s preferred solution for the intelligent intersection simulation traffic model is to optimize the green signal ratio and phase difference by genetic algorithm, optimizing the signal period according to the signal plans. The traffic impact assessments within the network can generate new signal timing schemes in real-time for local adjustments, which amazingly improves the traffic efficiency of the intersection.
Shine Tech’s Edge Intelligent Perception Agent (EIPA) is a 5G smart pole that provides a human 3D-profiling solution. The sensors build an intelligent sensor network for the city by detecting the crowd’s movements, person identification, car identification, crowd tracking, car movement tracking, traffic predictions, and other functions. Information about people, cars, and the road is positioned with precision. It then interacts with self-driving vehicles, drones, and other unmanned systems, expanding into a range of smart city services.
From Technology to Delivery, Customers’ Trust and Recognition are the Best Affirmation
In the car market, Shine Tech’s software development services and copyright licensing model provide solutions for clients in the car industry. They are working with many car companies such as SAIC-GM, FAW-Volkswagen, DIAS, BMW, and Harman. In the field of smart highways, Shine Tech started from pilot zones in Fujian and Shandong, where they worked with partners to test and gradually expand the scope.
At the same time, Shine Tech is also working with Smart City Future Mobility Demonstration Zone towards a bigger future. At present, they have already started cooperation with Shanghai Intelligent and Connected Vehicle R&D Center (SICV) in Lingang Nanqiao Intelligent Transportation Ecological Valley and reached a statement of intent with Alibaba DAMO Academy.
At present, Shine Tech has many partners, including car companies such as BMW, FAW-Volkswagen, Great Wall Motor, and other car companies, as well as organizations such as China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and ICVs platform Tus Cloud Control. Wei Junbo said, “Our company is technology-led. From our core technology to service delivery, we gained the trust and recognition of many clients, which are the best affirmation for our company.”
Participation in Alibaba Cloud’s 5G Industry Competition Led to Multi-angled View of the Company’s Development
“At first, I discovered Alibaba Cloud Innovation Center because of BMW Startup Garage, a cooperation project of Alibaba Cloud and BMW, started in Shanghai Jinqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone. Later, I learned that Alibaba Cloud Innovation Center has held industry startup competitions for a long time, and decided to participate in the China’s 5G Industry Innovation Entrepreneurship Contest.” Wei Junbo said, “Participation in the competition’s allowed us to take a more macro and multi-angle view of our company’s development and better understand the industry we are in, which prompted us to improve our product planning. Alibaba Cloud Innovation Center also gave us a lot of guidance and resource matchmaking.”
The development of V2X is slower than one-way intelligence in self-driving vehicles because V2X’s upstream and downstream industry chain is long and complex, including device manufacturers, connected cars companies, map vendors and high precision positioning system providers, holistic solution providers, network & communication service providers, cloud computing service providers, travel service providers, car companies, government agencies, and many other players. Wei Junbo said, “In the current V2X industry, only when all the technologies involved work together can we achieve the commercialization of the industry.”
“As the technology evolves and the industry progresses, I hope the company can participate in the national transportation construction.” Commenting on the company’s plans, Wei Junbo believed that robust technology could help them overcome challenges and difficulties before achieving commercial values. They are vigorously working towards this direction.
Around the world, countries with a highly-developed automotive industry such as the United States, Europe, Japan, and others have taken ICVs as an important direction for the future. They have accelerated their plans and efforts for the vehicle-road coordination industry. China has always been a firm supporter of the national C-V2X technology, and since 2016, China has introduced a series of policies to support the development of connected cars and ICVs.
According to incomplete statistics, there are more than 30 city-level and enterprise-level ICVs testing and demonstration sites, including 16 national demonstration zones. In the future, the technology and industrial system of ICVs will continue to mature, and highly automated, family-used ICVs will be distributed on a large scale. Shine Tech will continue to participate in the construction of the industry by contributing its technical advantages and drive forward the development of the national intelligent transportation industry.
